STARTUP
Just as before. Press the space bar on the keyboard or the power button on the CPU. When the "Enter Network Password" box appears, type in your AS400 ID and your corresponding password and click OK. If there are already ones there, blank them out and retype your own. The system will ask confirmation of the password in a separate box after you click the OK button. Type it in again and click the OK button in that box.
THE DESKTOP
You’ll see icons on the left and the task bar on the bottom. Some of the icons are used to start programs. Others are used to open up disk and file management windows. On the left end of the task bar is the start button. By clicking on it you can access the popup menus that contain MS Office and MS Works programs. The start button also contains a documents section for recently created documents.
When you minimize programs, they will appear on the task bar. You can click on them to bring them back up onto your screen. You can also use the Alt-TAB and Alt-Esc keys that you used to use on the old setup. They have the same function as in Windows 3.11.
WINDOWS
On almost all windows you will find the minimize, full screen and exit controls. They are in the upper right hand corner of each window. If you hit the little minus sign, the program will shrink to the task bar. You can click on it later to bring it back up. The middle one is the full screen or windowed control toggle and the X is the eXit control that quits the program.
SHUTDOWN
To shut down your system, click the start button then click the shutdown option. You’ll get a dialog box with three options. One to shut down the computer, one to restart the computer and one to log off and log back into the computer. Click on the corresponding white dot to select what the computer will do when you click OK.
You must always shut your system down. Never just "Turn It Off". This can cause major problems. However, they may be times that the system locks up and won’t respond. Pressing the reset or power buttons to shut your system down should be a "last resort action" and done ONLY when nothing else can be.
